Question How The Heck Do I Seperate My Muffler Connection

Hi Guys (Still A Newbie)

Need new tires for my 1985 Electra Glide Classic. So I decided to pull the
rear tire myself ~ And GOD said, " YEAH RIGHT "

As you can see from the 3 attachments ~ I can't seperate or break the seal
on the muffer pipes

Someone said to hit the area with W-40 and let it lay over-night and then hit it again in the morning ?

I tried to TWIST the muffler off by hand NO WAY ! ! !

Questions Guys:

1. Should I hit the joint with a plastic hammer and try to loosen it
2. Hit it with penertrating oil
3. Apply HEAT to one end and hope that I can pull it free

I 'M STUCK GUYS ~ YOU TELL ME IF ANY OF YOU HAVE DISASSEMBLE YOUR MUFFERS ?

HELP

I just did new headers on my 09 FLHX and the mufflers were tough to get off. I worked them up and down and side to side to loosen up. Also used a rubber mallet to tap on top of muffler where it mounts to bracket below bags. once you get them off use a little anti-sieze when you re-install. When you put back on you can use a block of wood to tap on end if needed. Good luck!!

Thumbs up I Got 'Em Off MattWillians

Hey MattWilliams

Thanks 4 your impute; but I FINALLY got my mufflers off so I can replace the rear and front tires on my 1985 H-D Electrea Glide Classic ~ Whew !

Here's what I was told to do ( By GREAT GUYS like yourself who helped me through this allmost nightmare )

I hit the muffler joint with penertation oil and let it lay overy night. Come morning I hit the area again with the oil .

I got a LARGE screw driver with a shape blade & a 3lb. Hammer. I place the blade of the screw diver right between the muffler pipe joint. And I started BANDING AWAY

Litter by slowly the joint started to part.
NOTE: I never took off my mufflers EVER.

So this was a touch and go for me. But the guys on the forum told me just what to do.

Matt; In between is a COPPER GASKET as you can see in the attachments.

So in closing of this NOVEL There's a happy ending. The mufflers are off and now onto REMOVING THE REAR TIRE

I do hope that this HELPS others guys to learn from my experience.
GOD willing
